How Wagering Requirements Work

GuidesPublished September 18, 2026Checked

A wagering requirement is a requirement that a consumer must place wagers totalling a particular value for deposits or bonuses to become eligible for withdrawal. It can be expressed as a fixed amount, but it is most commonly written as a multiplier of another amount, such as an initial deposit or bonus, with examples like 20x, 30x, or 40x. .

The multiplier can apply solely to the bonus amount, or it can apply to the combined total of the bonus and deposit. This distinction is crucial, as it directly impacts the total wagering requirement.

A simple example illustrates how the same 40x multiplier can translate to substantially different outcomes. If a bonus is £100 and is written as 40x, with the multiplier applying to the bonus-only, the player must wager £4,000. However, if the 40x requirement is on the combined amount of the deposit plus bonus, the required wagering doubles to £8,000 (a £4,000 deposit plus £4,000 as 40x the £100 bonus). A 10x wagering requirement on a £10 bonus, by comparison, only mandates £100 in total bets before being withdrawable. .

Apart from the key denominator choice, other significant factors influence how much wagering is actually needed. Take, for instance, game weighting. Not all bets contribute equally to the wagering requirement. Slots typically offer 100% contribution, but live games and classic or reel slots are weighted at a lesser percentage. Some live or jackpot games do not count at all. So a 20x wagering requirement on a £100 bonus would mean wagering £8,000, but that would take much longer to complete on games that only contribute, say, 10% of a stake. .

Beyond the denominator and the weighting, a wagering requirement is affected by several key side-rules. The most common is a maximum bet limit, where a player risk losing a bonus and all associated winnings by making any stake above that ceiling. A time limit also frequently applies, and any wagering requirement tied to the time-limited bonus expires along with it, fully or partially. And a maximum cashout is a common cap on how much of any bonus-generated earnings a player gets to keep. .

Bonus funds themselves are rarely directable as withdrawal, so reading the bonus terms before claiming them is vital, to understand the full specifics. In particular, one should check the multiplier, the denominator it applies to, the rangings of game weighting, and whether there are maximum bet, time, or cashout rules that could halt progress. Because if a bonus and its winnings are voided, for example on exceeding a maximum bet, the only recourse is often no more than the return of the original funds. .

Before accepting any bonus, read its terms to check the multiplier, its scope (bonus or bonus-plus-deposit), the game weighting, the bet max, the expiry period, and the cashout cap. Each modular rule layer makes the bonus work very different from the 40x headline. The bottom line is, you need that first keyword ratio to interpret what collateral terms you must check.

The Japanese position. Betting through an online casino from inside Japan is an offence under articles 185 and 186 of the Penal Code, and since 25 September 2025 advertising or soliciting for overseas casino sites is separately banned. Public betting — the four racing sports, the football lottery and the national lottery — is legal from the age of 20 through official channels. Free help in Japan is listed here.
