Gembing Manisait Gains Ground in Health and Beauty Circles as Traffic Trends Shift

10 October 2026

The Indonesian tuber called gembing manisait, known in its raw form as gembili, is surging in popularity across health and beauty circles. Driving this surge: the trend toward guided, personalized digital discovery that is transforming how consumers explore and adopt wellness habits and beauty products.

What is gembing manisait?

Gembili is a starchy tuber similar to a potato, native to Indonesia. Halodoc describes the raw tuber as dense, starchy, with a fibrous network that must be boiled to cook for optimal chewiness. Raw gembili has a mildly sweet taste that deepens considerably when cooked, Halodoc reports.

The tuber has steadily gained ground as a health food. According to figures published on Halodoc, 100 grams of raw gembili typically contains 95 to 115 kcal, complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, protein, vitamin C, thiamine (vitamin B1), and pyridoxine (vitamin B6). Gembili also contains potassium and has a low glycemic index.

Halodoc and the rise of the 'health circle'

Health enthusiasts have long been aware of the fiber, vitamins and minerals in gembili. But search data suggests gembili is attracting far more attention from a wide swath of 'health circle' consumers than in previous years, a trend that corresponds with a rising search interest in plant-based health foods more broadly.

How does this connect to beauty trends?

As health trends become more niche and more rigorously researched, beauty discovery is also shifting toward more specific, trend-led suggestions and imagery. Consumer product company Pinterest's first-ever U.S. beauty trend report, released on October 6, 2026, found a surge in truly specific search queries this year, many of which belong to niche trends the company named for its own use.

The company's report covers 11 themes and 120 specific search queries. Strikingly, 23 of 120 individual searches grew by 500% or more. Pinterest reported that the median growth rate across all 120 search terms was 145.5%, while the mean growth rate was 277.3%. Even the lowest specific growth rate detailed in the report, quieter search trends grew significantly, not trending towards growth in any meaningful way – a year-over-year gain of 21% for searches around 'scalp detox.'

Done right, guided experiences go viral

To what can we attribute such a seismic shift in user behavior? Here's where things get particularly important for brands and content creators in the beauty space: Consumer trends organization Revieve's 2025 Beauty & Wellness Index found that 60-75% of consumers make their purchases based on a guided experience. This includes diagnostics, quizzes, and virtual try-ons that allow consumers to easily mix and match products with trusted results. In the makeup category, photo-based virtual try-ons were responsible for more than 80% of searches. The company also points out that products tested virtually tended to outsell their traditional digital twins, and tended to evaluate customers adding them to buy now pages at least 40%.

A brand case study: Gem

Australia's Gem Personal Care is one of the brands optimizing for a guided beauty experience. Retail Beauty reports that the company does extensive study on identifying individual scents that consumers commonly encounter in daily life. More than 90% of the brand’s portfolio, from 48-hour deodorants to hair care to fragrance, relies on that very specific scent study. As a result, Gem products—particularly its Sensorial Collection—have remained in high demand and account for a high percentage of their single-volume-demand searches.

Gem, Retail Beauty reports, was launched as a fragrance-first care company. The globally stocked brand’s newer iterations of its products rely on ingredients familiar in beauty industry merchandise, such as hyaluronic acid, shea butter, glycerine, sugar and simple vitamins. These ingredients cost consumers a daily and weekly ritual, depending on their personal care habits.

Looking forward

So how will these data-determined trends shape the future of beauty content and discovery? In the same way the idea of gembili sold 90 seconds ago, consumers will likely begin turning their daily routines over to brands and sellers who can demonstrate that they’ve done their due diligence.
